Fourty-four Fourtunes of Formosa
About the Program
How do you listen to an island? Drift through a sea of numbers in an entirely new form of choral theater.
The most ordinary of things, numbers, are set completely free and their codes deconstructed: homophones become prophecies, and, reassembled, they turn into secret words. Perhaps you will be one of the island’s stone lions, silently witnessing the singing as it circles and drifts around you: up and down, left and right, from every direction. Taipei Chamber Singers, composer Kueiju Lin and director Hung Chien-Han invite you into an immersive world of sound.
“When we count to four, what comes to mind?” This is a tongue twister that brings you blessings. The creators set out to build an immersive performance, vivid with a sense of presence, through sound and image. Sixteen singers become moving coordinates of sound, surrounding you, as voices roam the theater wave after wave like the tide. This journey of association, which begins in puzzlement, ultimately returns to the original intent of the work: to offer every islander a deep and heartfelt blessing.
