About the Program
After the Renaissance reached its peak in counterpoint and polyphony, an entirely new concept of vocal performance emerged in the seventeenth century. Drawing inspiration from ancient Greek tragedy, musicians sought to express the full range of human emotion more profoundly, in a new style of singing closer to speech, shaping the core spirit of the Baroque era.
Designed especially for Taipei Chamber Singers by French baritone Marc Mauillon, the program uses ensembles of varying sizes and features Italian and French vocal works from the late Renaissance to the middle Baroque, illustrating “the transformation of vocal art from the Renaissance to the Baroque.” Recreating the Baroque practice of performing without a conductor, Marc Mauillon leads as a singer from within the ensemble, performing alongside Taipei Chamber Singers and offering audiences a glimpse into the wonders of Baroque vocal music.
