Songs of the Island

Part of the Taiwan Music Institute’s “Images of Taiwanese Music” series, this album presents choral works by 蕭泰然, 馬水龍, 沈錦堂, 徐松榮, Chang Hsuan-Wen, Xing-Kui Zeng, 錢南章, and Shu Xi Chen, arranged in order of the composers’ years of birth.

The program spans Mandarin, Taiwanese, Hakka, and Indigenous languages. The interplay of their different linguistic cadences offers a sonic cross-section of Taiwan’s cultural diversity and of the energy that Taiwanese choral music has built up over the years.
