Galloping Through the East: New Voices at the Limit
Centered on contemporary Asia, Taipei Chamber Singers’ album “Utmost Utterance of the Time II” features six new contemporary Asian classics, each with its own distinctive musical imagination: “Prelude to Water Melody” (水調歌頭) by renowned Taiwanese composer Fuk Wing Yim, which uses modern techniques to evoke boundless poetic feeling; “Snow” (雪) by Israeli woman composer Epstein, which weaves vocal tension while reflecting on political turmoil in Central Asia; “Tsang Tse” (鑼鼓運動) by outstanding Taiwanese composer Ching Wen Chao, which draws on Chinese opera gong-and-drum patterns to shape a new Eastern vocal aesthetic; and “Dust Hides the Xianyang Bridge” (塵埃不見咸陽橋) by veteran Hong Kong composer Doming Lam, a monumental work blending elements of Chinese opera with overwhelming sonorities to retell the blood and tears of war, among others. Treasure these new paths in the sound of the East.
