Asian Chinese Choral Commissions: World Premiere Night
About the Program
A contemporary vision connecting Asia: new voices without limits
Since its launch in 2006, the Taipei Chamber Singers’ Music Unlimited Project has remained devoted to vocal experimentation and to new ways of thinking about choral music, building remarkable momentum in just three years. In 2009, Music Unlimited IV broadens its circle of commissioned composers: alongside outstanding Taiwanese composers Xing-Kui Zeng, Shu Xi Chen, and Chen Hui Jen, it invites Professors Yong Hua Chen and Victor Chen of the composition program at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, carrying the project beyond Taiwan and raising it to a contemporary choral composition project for Asian Chinese composers. This premiere concert will present Hong Kong composer Professor Victor Chen’s suite of poems by Li He, “If Heaven Had Feelings” (天若有情); Professor Yong Hua Chen’s “Beauty Yu” (虞美人) and “Nunc Dimittis”; Taiwanese composer Shu Xi Chen’s suite “From the Mountains of Taiwan” (來自台灣的高山); Professor Xing-Kui Zeng’s “Gatha” (偈), “Lullaby” (搖籃曲), and “Cattle-Driving Song” (趕牛歌); and Chen Hui Jen’s suite “Voices of the Mountains” (山之聲). We hope that lovers of choral art will join the Taipei Chamber Singers in sharing this forward-looking vision of contemporary Chinese music
