About the Program
The finale of the concert series celebrating the 50th anniversary of ACL-Taiwan. The program features “Song of Burying Flowers” (葬花吟), a celebrated choral work by Hsu Tsang-houei, the composer who launched Taiwan’s modern music movement and helped found the Asian Composers League, and works by 馬水龍, long-time leader of ACL-Taiwan, including “The Black-Faced Patriarch” (黑面祖師公) and “Brother An-Tong Buys Groceries” (安童哥買菜). Also on the program are choral masterpieces that fuse the folk songs of Taiwan’s many ethnic groups with contemporary compositional techniques, among them Xing-Kui Zeng’s “A Little Bird” (一隻鳥仔) and “La La i,” and 錢善華’s “Hallelujah” and “Ave Maria,” as well as choral works by mid-career and younger composers 蘇凡凌, 連憲升, Tzyy Sheng Lee, and Ching Wen Chao, inspired by literature, Indigenous cultures, nanguan, and Peking opera percussion. Together they reveal the diverse, distinctive, and rich languages and soundscapes of Taiwan.
