“Shape|Light|Sound” Concludes as the Music Unlimited Platform Enters Its Twentieth Year
From the Borneo rainforest to the Ordos grasslands, with two commissioned world premieres on the same program—Music Unlimited No. 16 marks the platform’s twentieth year.
“Shape|Light|Sound” traveled from the wind, tree shadows and jaw harps of the Borneo rainforest, through wordless voices in Montreal breathing in rhythm, to the open sky of the Ordos grasslands; amid interwoven foreign and mother tongues we recognized ourselves, dove into the geological time of “Ochre,” and finally followed folk songs and ballads back to this land.
As Music Unlimited enters its twentieth year, we continue down this path.
Thank you to Resident Conductor Apo Hsu, whose boundless positive energy and musical flow led us through this demanding contemporary choral concert. Thank you to Kee Yong Chong and Jules Bastin-Fontaine for new works that showed us choral landscapes farther away; and wonderful works by Wenchen Qin and Fang-Yi Lin returned to the stage—that works continue to be sung is one of the most important achievements of Music Unlimited’s twenty years.
Thank you to Chung-Yuan Yu for “The Olive Tree” (橄欖樹), whose familiar melody brought the evening’s explorations to a close; for our encore we sang 錢善華’s “Tiu Tiu Tang-a” (丟丟銅仔), a work of particular historical significance to us, which drew an enthusiastic response from the full house at the end of the concert.
Thank you to Nai-Chia Wang (piano), 黃雅綾 (percussion), and all our colleagues behind the scenes for their full commitment. Finally, thank you to every audience member who joined us—your attentive listening and applause are the most important strength that keeps the Taipei Chamber Singers moving forward.
We will keep moving forward, exploring the voice and choral music in every direction and bringing you more contemporary sounds that brim with imagination and go straight to the heart.
