TCS Female Choir TCS Female Choir

An affiliated ensemble of the Taipei Chamber Singers, the TCS Female Choir (formerly the TCS Women’s Choir) was founded in 1997 by women from across Taiwan. Alongside busy family and working lives, these music-loving mothers devote what time they can spare to enriching themselves, in the hope of putting what they learn to use in serving and caring for society.

Under the leadership of former artistic directors Serene Liang, Jia Fen Wong and Yun-Hung Chen, and current conductor 方素貞, the TCS Female Choir has developed the distinctive character of a women’s choir. Its annual “Songs of the Years” (歲月如歌) series promotes fine choral music while drawing on more varied forces and more approachable repertoire, so that audiences unfamiliar with classical performance can also experience the beauty of music. In addition to well-received tours within Taiwan, the choir has been invited several times to tour Japan, Malaysia and elsewhere, engaging in genuine cultural exchange with local arts organizations and making friends through music.

Beyond the concert stage, the choir has worked to overturn the narrow public image of amateur community choirs. In 2007 it won the adult division of the 12th National Zhongshan Cup Golden Voice Choral Competition. In 2012, at the Taiwan International Vocal Ensemble Festival: World Cup Innovative Choral Competition, it took all three major awards in the senior category: the category’s only Gold Award, the Han Guang Poetry Performance Award and the Best Stage Presentation Award. With its striking artistry, the choir wrote a proud and moving chapter for the women of Taiwan.
