Shen Ye Shen Ye

Composer

Composer Dr. Shen Ye has been described as “one of the most fascinating representatives of contemporary Chinese music, integrating Chinese culture into his own musical language” (Accentus Music). He is the first Chinese composer to sign with the music publisher Breitkopf & Härtel, which publishes and represents his complete works and promotes them internationally. Shen Ye has received dozens of honors and awards in China and abroad, including the Bach-Preis-Stipendium of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg (2011), first place in the China Symphonic Works Competition and the First Prize of the Wenhua Award for Music Composition (2007), and the inaugural Theory and Criticism Award of the China Golden Bell Award (2011).

Works commissioned by festivals in many countries, as well as his collaborations with numerous leading orchestras and fellow musicians, have drawn the attention of musicians, audiences, and media around the world. He and his works have been described as “very refined, rich in interaction and full of fascinating detail” (IRCAM 2014); “he writes music of great inner originality, colorful and deeply expressive, of the most individual character” (Elmar Lampson, HfMT 2010); and “an intoxicating concerto—with a highly personal musical language, Shen Ye writes music that is universal and of our time” (Remy Franck, Pizzicato 2019).

Shen Ye is currently an associate professor in the Department of Composition at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, teaching composition and orchestration (SHCM, 2003–).
