Composer

Dr. Chong Kee Yong is a renowned Malaysian composer, curator and music educator who has long been active on the international contemporary music scene and is regarded as one of the most creative and imaginative composers of his generation. His output spans instrumental, chamber, orchestral and electronic music as well as cross-disciplinary experimental art, and is distinguished above all by its finely wrought, distinctive timbres and its fusion of cultures. He brings together the sounds of Southeast Asian traditions, the spirit of Chinese culture and the vocabulary of contemporary experimental music into a vivid and highly personal artistic style. The Hungarian master Péter Eötvös has praised his works as full of imagination and poetry, while the British composer Jonathan Harvey described his music as both inventive and purely beautiful.

Chong has won many major international composition awards, including the Marcel Hastir Prize of the Royal Academies for Science and the Arts of Belgium (1999, 2003), the Andrzej Panufnik Prize for Young Composers in Poland (2002), the Grand Prize of the Seoul International Composition Competition (2003), a prize at the Max Reger International Composition Competition in Germany (2004), the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra International Composition Award (2004), Second Prize at the Lutosławski Composition Competition in Warsaw (2006), the BMW Prize at the Isang Yun International Composition Competition in Korea (2007), and a special prize of the Giga-Hertz Award from the ZKM Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, Germany (2009).

He has been invited as composer- and artist-in-residence by many international arts institutions, including the Akademie der Künste in Germany, the Künstlerhaus Edenkoben in Germany, the Asian Cultural Council in the United States, the Centre Henri Pousseur in Belgium, the SWR Experimentalstudio in Germany, the Civitella Ranieri Foundation (USA/Italy), the National Gugak Center in Korea and Forum Wallis in Switzerland.

Chong was the first Malaysian composer to receive a scholarship from the Koussevitzky Music Foundation in the United States, and was named one of Malaysia’s Ten Outstanding Young Persons (Cultural Achievement). In 2014 he received a full scholarship from the University of Huddersfield in the UK to study with the renowned Australian composer Professor Liza Lim, and was awarded his PhD in 2016.

Beyond composing, he is deeply involved in music education and arts advocacy. He has served as Distinguished Professor of Composition at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and Visiting Professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, and is currently Visiting Professor at the Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Music (PGVIM) in Thailand. He has served as Vice-President and President of the Society of Malaysian Contemporary Composers, and is Artistic Director of the SoundBridge contemporary music festival, working over many years to advance contemporary music in Southeast Asia and cross-cultural artistic exchange. Since 2022 his works have been published exclusively by Verlag Neue Musik in Germany.
