In recent years composer Shih Wei Lo has focused on research, creation, and collaboration in interdisciplinary art, combining instruments, voices, electronic music, digital media, and mechatronic art installations. Lo is currently a doctoral student in composition at the University of Washington in Seattle, where Lo also teaches and does research at the Center for Digital Arts and Experimental Media (DXARTS). While studying in the Department of Music at National Taiwan Normal University, Lo studied with Professor Ching Wen Chao and also received guidance from Kris Falk.
Lo has collaborated with and been invited to write for many renowned musicians and ensembles, including Frank Brakkee, violist of the Dutch Nieuw Ensemble; Melia Watras, professor of viola at the University of Washington; Valerie Muzzolini Gordon, principal harp of the Seattle Symphony; 解瑄, principal harp of the National Symphony Orchestra; and the Taipei Contemporary Music Ensemble. Lo was the only recipient in composition in the arts category of the Ministry of Education’s study-abroad scholarship for the 2010 academic year, and has won awards in the NTCH Composition Competition for Taiwanese Composers and the Ministry of Education Literary and Arts Creation Award. Recent conferences and forums include the International Society for Music Information Retrieval (ISMIR) 2013; a composers’ workshop held by the Seattle Symphony; the Taipei Contemporary Music Ensemble’s “Taiwan Contemporary Music Forum (30): Musical Ideas, Notation, Interpretation”; and the 2009 Asian Composers League Festival, where Lo represented Taiwan’s young composers.
