4th Sing for Love Lectures: Chung-Yuan Yu × Jia Fen Wong, and 鍾永豐, on 22 November

Two free lectures explore the core of creation, from the artistry and singability of the music to the contemporaneity of the lyrics; 60 seats per session.

As the Sing for Love project enters its fourth edition, we continue to seek out outstanding choral works and to sow the seeds of creation. This time we have invited three of the competition’s jurors—Chung-Yuan Yu, Jia Fen Wong and 鍾永豐—to share how inspiration can be precisely grounded and transformed into lyrics and music. Across two lectures, from the artistry and singability of the “music” to the contemporaneity of the “lyrics,” they will explore the core of creation in depth.

Session 1 | “Sing for Love: Artistry and Singability in the Choral Art Song”

Sat 11/22, 13:30–15:30 | Speaker: Chung-Yuan Yu | In conversation: Jia Fen Wong

“Love” is a language both delicate and candid—and so is the art song. Its artistry comes from delicate layering, while its melody, speaking straight from the heart, is what allows it to be sung by many. Chung-Yuan Yu, who won Best Composition at the Golden Melody Awards for Traditional Arts and Music for “Seven Chapters of Life” (人生七章) and took first prize in the 1st Sing for Love competition, and Jia Fen Wong, one of Taiwan’s leading choral conductors, will use classic choral works and this edition’s winning works to show how “artistry” and “singability” can complement each other in writing choral art songs.

Session 2 | “What Makes Lyrics ‘Contemporary’?”

Sat 11/22, 16:00–18:00 | Speaker: 鍾永豐

In an age of diverse media, does music still need lyrics? If we believe that words, and the voices they shape, are the tentacles of music’s soul that can help us explore the spiritual texture of our time, then perhaps we can look afresh at the relationship between lyrics and music. 鍾永豐, twice winner of Best Lyricist at the Golden Melody Awards, will lead us to consider how lyrics can distill social life and draw from tradition to speak with today’s listeners.
