International Acclaim Again: Taipei Chamber Singers’ Affiliated Choir Puts Taiwan on the Map Through Song

[CWNTP, 應瑋漢, cwnkent88@gmail.com] TCS Women’s Choir, an affiliated ensemble of Taipei Chamber Singers, was recently invited to a choral music festival in northern Italy as the closing act of the opening program. The choir sang in Italy’s elegant historic concert halls and churches, gave outdoor performances on scenic lakeshores and outside medieval castles, and even sang atop Plan de Corones, a ski resort 2,275 meters above sea level, filling the Alps with song. During the festival and its grand parade, the choir sang songs in Taiwan’s many languages with the national flag flying over the venue. Crowds of fans along the route cheered and clasped the members’ hands, saying it was the best choir they had heard in many years of attending the festival! TCS Women’s Choir not only brought refined and moving performances to the festival but also practiced the finest kind of people-to-people diplomacy through choral singing, letting the world see Taiwan!

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Taipei Chamber Singers and the 20th anniversary of TCS Women’s Choir. Carrying on many years of dedication to refined choral music, all of the ensembles have distinguished themselves in the arts at home and abroad. In recent years, Taipei Chamber Singers has forged a distinctive style on the international music scene through experimental, avant-garde contemporary music; it has repeatedly been designated to premiere works at international contemporary music festivals, and through its Music Unlimited project has established a leading position in contemporary Asian vocal music. Doming Lam (林樂培), honorary chairman of the Asian Composers League, once remarked: “Taipei Chamber Singers and Cloud Gate Dance Theatre are both cultural treasures on the international stage.” The choir’s current Artistic Director and Conductor, Austrian-trained musician Ms. Yun-Hung Chen, has shaped a vision for this vocal brand along three axes: “artistic depth,” “far-reaching vision,” and “social breadth.”

Taipei Chamber Singers has now traveled a quarter of a century. Time has been the driving force behind its artistic achievements; perseverance has spurred its constant transformation and the refinement of enduring artistic values. The production “Confluence” (匯流) traces the path TCS has walked over these 25 years, revealing it from the inside out and from past to present. Besides Taipei Chamber Singers, the performers include TCS Women’s Choir (now marking its 20th anniversary), freshly returned in glory from the northern Italy festival, and all the other TCS affiliated ensembles, with local choirs also invited to share the stage and exchange ideas.
