2019 Listening: Songs · Seeking Hakka

Songs: new Hakka melodies; seeking: ancient Hakka sounds

Folk songs carry the life paths and memories of our forebears.

Taipei Chamber Singers’ 2019 “Listening” (聽你．聽我) concert centers on Hakka songs, featuring 17 new Hakka-language choral works and choral arrangements of traditional Hakka melodies. It invites listeners to experience the beauty of the “nine accents and eighteen tunes” of Hakka music, following the songs to misty, rain-soaked foothills to discover the Hakka cultural landscape: unpretentious, reserved, frugal and mindful of its roots.

We hope these familiar melodies will take music lovers on a journey of “listening through memory,” touching life experiences hidden deep in memory and turning a profound listening experience into strength for living.
