The 2018 1st Sing for Love Choral and Solo Song Composition Competition was initiated by Rotary International District 3521 Governor 王光明, who invited District 3481 Governor 莊進標, District 3482 Governor 陳世霖 and 張順立, President of the Friends of the National Culture and Arts Foundation, to join. Taipei Chamber Singers was invited to bring its musical expertise as organizer, in the hope of using choral singing—an art of many voices—to warm hearts and convey love and positive values, while discovering emerging songwriters and composers in Taiwan.

Judging of New Works and Announcement of Winners

Since registration opened in May this year (2018), the competition has drawn many enthusiastic entries from songwriters and composers, including young people studying abroad; by the close at the end of October, more than 80 works had been received. The distinguished jury was chaired by Yun-Hung Chen, Artistic Director and Conductor of Taipei Chamber Singers, and included lyricists 陳樂融 and 王友輝 and composers Shu Xi Chen, Ching Wen Chao, 林京美, 許雙亮, 蘇凡凌 and 林純純. After lively discussion, the jury selected this year’s 12 winning works from the more than 70 entries that met the requirements in the written review.

Musical praise born of love; choral music that moves with kindness

We hope Sing for Love will be not only a positive and encouraging composition competition but also a real source of support for young composers. In addition to prize money, the 12 winning works will be premiered by Taipei Chamber Singers, one of Asia’s leading vocal ensembles, at the awards ceremony and premiere concert of winning works on 2 March 2019.

Several of this year’s winners are young talents in their twenties, one only 19 years old. Through concert premieres, licensed publication of the scores and a series of outreach programs, we hope to help launch them on careers as professional songwriters and composers, and look forward to many more fine works in the future—carrying good intentions to every listener’s heart through song and extending the spirit of Sing for Love even further.
