Guest Conductor

The French baritone Marc Mauillon has a richly coloured voice of striking individuality. His repertoire spans every period, from medieval and Baroque to Classical, Romantic and contemporary music, and he moves with ease across ten centuries of musical styles. He has sung works by Lully, Rameau, Monteverdi and Purcell at the Paris Opera, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, with the Orchestre de Paris and the Berlin Philharmonic, at the Theater an der Wien, the Wiener Festwochen, the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam, the Salzburg Festival and the Utrecht Early Music Festival, and has recorded them as well.

He graduated from the Conservatoire de Paris in 2004, where he studied with Peggy Bouveret. In 2002 he was chosen to join Les Arts Florissants, the early music ensemble of William Christie, and in 2010 he received a French award as outstanding newcomer. Mauillon took part in the first “Jardin des Voix” (Garden of Voices) and has studied and worked with many leading Baroque ensembles and soloists of today, including Les Arts Florissants, Le Poème Harmonique, Le Concert d’Astrée, Le Concert Spirituel and Les Talens Lyriques. Since 2005 he has performed Machaut’s secular music with P. Hamon, V. Biffi and A. Mauillon, offering a fresh interpretive approach above all in recordings of extended monophonic works (L’Amoureus Tourment, 2006; Le Remède de Fortune, 2009; and Mon chant vous envoy, 2013). This also led to frequent collaborations in concert and on record with the early music masters J. Savall and M. Figueras and Hespèrion XXI.

As an opera singer, Mauillon also has a very wide range, having performed roles in operas by W. A. Mozart, F. Poulenc, M. Ravel, J. Offenbach, B. Britten, L. Bernstein, P. Eötvös and K. Saariaho. His varied and outstanding artistry is also reflected in his recordings of French and German art song with the pianists A. Le Bozec and G. Coppola, his early music collaborations with the harpist A. Mauillon, and his work with small ensembles and a cappella vocal groups.

Beyond the stage, Mauillon is a dedicated teacher, sought after by major conservatories across Europe for courses on medieval, Baroque and French musical style. He has taught at the Pôle Supérieur 93, and since 2018 has taught medieval secular music and its interpretation at Sorbonne University in France.
