Silence · Light
About the Program
A silent, timeless radiance: singing of nature, stillness, and the power of the divine
Silence · Light features sacred works by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt and Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara, conveying the mysticism embraced by contemporary Eastern European and Nordic composers and expressing the eternity of the divine. Swedish composer Jesper Nordin’s “Invisible Mantra” and contemporary master György Ligeti’s classic vocal work “Lux Aeterna” explore the flow of time: within an unbroken stream of sound, time never stops, yet it reveals its unchanging eternity. How we regard the ever-passing hours, and how we find our place as time and space keep moving forward, are questions people have pondered since antiquity.
Silence · Light explores human nature through three facets: the eternity of the divine, the eternity of time, and the eternity of nature. Through rich harmonic color and the many questions projected into the music, it highlights how modern people cannot stop their busy, restless lives, yet feel ever more alone inside; it also reminds us that the world was once utterly quiet, and that only in quiet can we see our inner selves clearly. The Taipei Chamber Singers looks forward to sharing with music-loving audiences a moment of profound stillness, where heart and senses merge as one amid the ever-changing play of voice, light, and shadow.
