About the Program

Outstanding East Asian composers ╳ Asia’s foremost contemporary voices
Creating a one-of-a-kind new classic of the contemporary East

Music Unlimited 10 (2017) gathers the creative energy of East Asia, inviting outstanding composers from Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, and Beijing to draw on the subjects of their own cultures and reveal how the regional cultures of East Asia are reflected, in their own distinctive way, in contemporary vocal art.

Although the cultures of East Asia have influenced one another throughout history, their substance and expression differ greatly, giving the region a cultural character that is at once similar and distinct. Since the twentieth century, the countries of East Asia have all faced the sweeping penetration, spread, and even impact of Western modern musical techniques and culture. How can composers, standing on their own cultural ground, reconstruct tradition and reflect on modernity, creating a sound and value unique to Eastern voices in response to the many cultural and intellectual challenges facing Eastern vocal art in a globalized age? This is what makes the commissioned premieres of Music Unlimited 10 so eagerly anticipated!
